How Tarot Works

Does everyone have the ability to see into the future, whether this be with a deck of tarot cards, through dream interpretation or other forms of intuition? Possibly, although the gift is certainly stronger in some individuals than others. Can anyone simply pick up a deck of tarot cards and divine what will happen in the future? Not without years of dedication, training and focus.

Interpreting tarot is like translating a poem. A single card, like a single word on its own, has one meaning. When the card is laid beside it’s sisters, it can adopt an entirely different meaning. The skill of the tarot reader is the ability to interpret the meaning within a spread of cards.

Take these two different translations from the first lines of Victor Hugo’s poem “Demain des l’aube”

The French : Demain, dès l’aube, à l’heure où blanchit la campagne,Je partirai.

Translation 1: Tomorrow, at dawn, in the hour when the countryside becomes white,
I will leave.

Translation 2: Tomorrow, at dawn, at the hour when the countryside whitens, I will depart.

There is a subtle difference between the phrase “I will depart” and “I will leave”. Departing is more formal, more expressive, and somehow more ‘right’ for the translation. A good tarot reader will know these minute differences and be able to make a personal and exact interpretation for you.
